QuickBooks Online says the file contains invalid transaction amount information

In short: Intuit lists "The uploaded file contains invalid transaction amount information." among its bank upload errors, and its CSV help says to keep the amounts column as simple as possible, because currency symbols and commas make uploads fail. The converter writes every amount as a plain number with a minus sign for money out, and removes characters that can block an import.

Bank CSV to QuickBooks Online (CSV)

A CSV with a date column and an amount (or debit and credit) column

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

One email when it ships. The address is used for nothing else. Details.

What you see

The upload stops with "The uploaded file contains invalid transaction amount information.", or with a general message such as "We were unable to upload the file. Please start over and re-select the file you want to upload."

Why it happens

Intuit's page on bank upload errors ties the invalid amount message to amounts that are too long (12 digits or more). Its CSV help adds that "it is best to keep the amounts column as simple as possible": currency symbols and thousands commas are a common cause, and the fix it gives is to format the column as General in a spreadsheet.

The same help page says "Special characters in the bank description can prevent you from importing your file", and that a file containing only money-out rows can fail.

Payment app exports write amounts like "$1,250.00", "+ $25.00" or "-€0.19", and their descriptions often carry emoji and symbols.

How to fix it

  1. Drop your CSV into the converter above.
  2. Check the preview: every amount is a plain number such as -1250.00, with no symbol and no thousands separator, and descriptions use a plain character set.
  3. Download the QuickBooks Online CSV and upload it without opening it in a spreadsheet first.

What this does not fix

  • If every row in your file is money out, the converter does not add a made-up row. Intuit's workaround is to add one positive row and untick it at the last step of the upload.
  • Characters such as emoji, $, < and > are left out of descriptions, so a description can read slightly differently from the export.
  • Intuit's pages also list errors that come from the account, not the file, such as uploading into a subaccount, which Intuit says is not supported. A converted file does not change those.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions > Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this CSV and the account to put it in.
  3. Map the columns: Date to Date, Description to Description, Amount to Amount (one column).
  4. Pick the date format MM/dd/yyyy (or the one you chose here) and confirm that the first row is a header.
  5. Review the transactions under For review.

Questions

What does "invalid transaction amount information" mean?
QuickBooks Online could not read one or more amounts. Intuit's pages point to amounts that are too long and to amount cells with currency symbols or commas. The converted file has neither.
Can I fix it in Excel instead?
Intuit suggests formatting the amount column as General. That can work for a simple bank file, but saving a payment app export from a spreadsheet does not remove its title rows, fee columns or mixed date formats.
Why did my upload fail when every transaction is a payment?
Intuit's CSV help says a file with only money-out rows can fail, and suggests adding one positive row that you untick before the import finishes.
