QuickBooks Online says your bank file is too large

In short: QuickBooks Online accepts a manually uploaded bank file of 350 KB or less, with up to 1,000 transactions. The converter below writes the full file and, when it is bigger than that, numbered parts that each stay under both limits, so you can upload them one at a time.

Fix the file

Bank CSV to QuickBooks Online (CSV)

A CSV with a date column and an amount (or debit and credit) column

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

What you see

You choose Upload from file in QuickBooks Online, pick a CSV or .qbo file covering a long date range, and the upload is refused because the file is too big, or only part of the history comes in.

Why it happens

Intuit's help page sets two limits for a manual upload: "Your upload file must be in English and 350 KB or less", and "You can include up to 1,000 lines per upload. Each line contains one transaction." A year of payment app activity often passes 1,000 transactions, and a .qbo file is several times larger than a CSV of the same transactions, so it reaches 350 KB sooner.

Intuit's own advice is to shorten the date range and download in smaller batches. That works when your bank lets you pick dates, but payment apps and older bank exports often give you one long file.

How to fix it

  1. Drop the CSV from your bank or payment app into the converter above. The source is detected, or pick it under From.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Online (CSV) or QuickBooks (.qbo Web Connect) under To.
  3. Download. If the file is over 1,000 transactions or 350 KB, the converter also lists numbered parts. For a .qbo file the parts are split between days where possible.
  4. Upload part 1, review and accept it, then upload part 2, and so on, into the same QuickBooks account.

What this does not fix

  • The parts follow Intuit's published limits; QuickBooks can still reject a file for other reasons, so check the For review list after each part.
  • Do not upload the full file and then the parts as well: QuickBooks would see the same transactions twice.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions > Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this CSV and the account to put it in.
  3. Map the columns: Date to Date, Description to Description, Amount to Amount (one column).
  4. Pick the date format MM/dd/yyyy (or the one you chose here) and confirm that the first row is a header.
  5. Review the transactions under For review.

Questions

What are the QuickBooks Online upload limits?
Intuit's help page says the upload file must be 350 KB or less and can include up to 1,000 lines, one transaction per line. The converter checks both and splits when either is exceeded.
Does the limit apply to QuickBooks Desktop?
The 350 KB and 1,000 line limits are on Intuit's QuickBooks Online upload page. The converter still gives you the single full .qbo file, which is what you import into QuickBooks Desktop through Web Connect.
Will splitting change my transactions?
No. Each part contains a run of the same transactions in date order, and every transaction keeps the same id it has in the full file.
