QuickBooks Online reads the dates in your CSV wrong

In short: Intuit asks for every date in an uploaded bank file to be in the same format, and for the weekday to be split out of the Date column. Exports that mix formats, add times or time zones, or spell months out cause date errors or transactions on the wrong day. The converter rewrites every date in one format you choose.

Fix the file

Bank CSV to QuickBooks Online (CSV)

A CSV with a date column and an amount (or debit and credit) column

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

One email when it ships. The address is used for nothing else. Details.

What you see

QuickBooks Online rejects the file at the date step, or the transactions land on the wrong days, for example 4 March instead of 3 April.

Why it happens

Intuit's upload page says: "Enter all Dates in the same format. We recommend the dd/mm/yyyy format." It also asks you to separate the weekday from the date when your bank adds it in the same column, and Intuit's list of common upload errors says to "Check the date format to make sure it matches the one you chose at the mapping stage."

Payment app exports often write a time and time zone next to the date (Cash App), an ISO timestamp (Venmo), or the month as a word (Etsy statements). A file opened and saved again in a spreadsheet can also end up with a mix of formats.

A date such as 03/04/2025 can be read as March 4 or April 3. If the format picked during upload does not match the file, every such date moves.

How to fix it

  1. Drop your CSV into the converter above.
  2. If the file has only dates where the day is 12 or lower, the converter asks which order it uses, showing one of your dates both ways. Answer once; the answer stays visible and can be changed.
  3. Under Date format pick the format you will choose in QuickBooks (MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD) and download.
  4. During the QuickBooks Online upload choose the same date format at the mapping step.

What this does not fix

  • Dates with a time zone are converted to the calendar day where the platform's own format allows it; a timestamp that was re-saved in a spreadsheet is kept as written, and the notes say so.
  • Intuit does not publish the full list of date formats the mapping step offers, so pick the one shown on your screen that matches the converter setting.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions > Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this CSV and the account to put it in.
  3. Map the columns: Date to Date, Description to Description, Amount to Amount (one column).
  4. Pick the date format MM/dd/yyyy (or the one you chose here) and confirm that the first row is a header.
  5. Review the transactions under For review.

Questions

Which date format should I use for QuickBooks Online?
Any one format, used for every row, that matches what you pick at the mapping step. Intuit's page asks for all dates in the same format. The converter offers MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY and YYYY-MM-DD.
How does the converter know whether 03/04 is March 4 or April 3?
It looks at every date in the file. As soon as one day number is above 12 the order is certain. If no date settles it, it asks you instead of guessing.
Why are some payments a day off?
Some platforms write times in UTC. A payment late in the evening in the United States can carry the next day's date in UTC. The converter converts known platform timestamps to the day in your time zone and says when it does.
