Your Venmo statement CSV will not import into QuickBooks

In short: A Venmo statement CSV is not a plain table: it has title lines above the column names, a beginning balance row, an ending balance row with a long disclaimer, and amounts written with a sign, a space and a dollar sign. QuickBooks Online wants one header row and plain 3 or 4 columns. The converter rebuilds the statement in that shape, or as a .qbo file.

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

What you see

QuickBooks Online shows the wrong column names at the mapping step, refuses the file, or imports the balance and disclaimer rows as if they were transactions.

Why it happens

Venmo lets you download a monthly statement as a CSV from Statements in the app or on venmo.com. Real statements published in public code repositories show the layout: two lines of account details above the table, a row for the beginning balance, the transactions, and a final row with the ending balance and a disclaimer that spans several lines inside one cell.

Amounts in the statement are written like "+ $25.00" and "- $1,000.00". QuickBooks Online expects 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 (Date, Description, Credit, Debit), per Intuit's upload page, so neither the extra rows nor these amounts fit.

Payments funded straight from a bank account or card are also listed, although that money never sat in your Venmo balance, and transfers to your bank are money moving between two of your own accounts.

How to fix it

  1. Download the month from Venmo: Statements, pick the month, then Download CSV.
  2. Drop the file into the converter above. It is recognised as a Venmo statement.
  3. Keep "Add matching transfer lines" ticked so the Venmo account in your books ends at Venmo's ending balance.
  4. Download the QuickBooks Online CSV (or choose the .qbo file under To) and upload it into a bank account in QuickBooks named Venmo, not your checking account.

What this does not fix

  • One statement covers one month; convert and import each month in order.
  • The converter checks the transactions against the beginning and ending balance in the file and tells you if they do not add up; it cannot see transactions that are not in the file.
  • Whether Venmo's total column is already net of the fee column is not confirmed by Venmo; the converter treats it as net and says so on files with fees.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions > Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this CSV and the account to put it in.
  3. Map the columns: Date to Date, Description to Description, Amount to Amount (one column).
  4. Pick the date format MM/dd/yyyy (or the one you chose here) and confirm that the first row is a header.
  5. Review the transactions under For review.

Questions

How do I download a Venmo statement CSV?
Venmo's help page: in the app go to Settings, then Statements, and pick the month; on venmo.com choose Statements in the sidebar, pick the month and click Download CSV. Large statements may be emailed.
Which QuickBooks account should the Venmo file go into?
A bank account named Venmo. Your Venmo balance is money held outside your bank, so it needs its own account; transfers to your bank then match as transfers between the two.
Can I remove the extra rows by hand instead?
You can delete the title, balance and disclaimer rows and rewrite every amount as a plain number, but opening and saving the file in a spreadsheet can also change the dates. The converter does the same edits without changing anything else.
