1. Export the file from Venmo

  1. Sign in at venmo.com on a computer.
  2. Open Statements in the left menu.
  3. Pick the month (click the year at the top to change the year).
  4. Click Download CSV. Large statements may be emailed to you instead.
  5. Upload that file here without opening and re-saving it in Excel.

Why a raw Venmo export fails in QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop

Venmo offers no .qbo, .qfx or .ofx download, so the statement has to be rebuilt as a bank file. Payments funded straight from a bank account or card are listed too, even though that money never sat in your Venmo balance.

QuickBooks cannot read a payment app CSV as a .qbo file, and renaming the file does not help. A .qbo file needs the OFX statement structure, an account type that matches the QuickBooks account you upload into, and an Intuit bank identifier.

What is unusual about the Venmo file

  • The first two lines are a title ("Account Statement - (@you)") and "Account Activity"; the real header is line 3 and starts with an empty column.
  • Amounts look like "+ $25.00" and "- $1,000.00" (sign, space, dollar sign).
  • A beginning-balance row comes before the transactions and an ending-balance row with a long multi-line disclaimer comes after them.
  • Notes can contain emoji and line breaks.
  • Times are in UTC. Choose your time zone and we convert them; otherwise a late-evening payment can show on the next day.
  • Payments paid from a linked bank or card do not touch your Venmo balance; we add a matching transfer line so the Venmo account still balances.
  • Newer statements (2024 and later) add Amount (tax), Tax Rate and Tax Exempt columns.

What QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop requires

  • OFX 1.0.2 SGML file carrying an Intuit bank id (INTU.BID 3000, a bank Intuit's published list shows as active for Web Connect).
  • QuickBooks US needs US dollars; QuickBooks Canada takes CAD or USD with bank id 2.
  • QuickBooks Online: up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB per upload (we split bigger files between days where possible).
  • Each transaction id is built from its date, amount, description and platform id, so the same row in two overlapping exports gets the same id.
  • Credit card accounts must be exported with account type "credit card".
  • QuickBooks Desktop only imports Web Connect in its supported (recent) releases.

3. Import the converted file into QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop

  1. QuickBooks Online: go to Transactions > Bank transactions, click Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this .qbo file, pick the QuickBooks account to put it in, and click Continue.
  3. QuickBooks Desktop: File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files, choose the file, then pick or create the account.
  4. Review the transactions under For review and add or match them.

Why do some Venmo payments not change my Venmo balance?
When a payment is funded directly from a linked bank account or card, Venmo still lists it on your statement, but the money moved through that bank or card. The converter adds a matching transfer line for each of those payments, so the Venmo account in your books still ends at Venmo's balance, and the transfer can be matched against your bank or card.
What does "QuickBooks is unable to verify the financial institution" mean?
It is commonly reported when the bank identifier (INTU.BID) inside a .qbo file is missing or not one QuickBooks recognizes. Files from this converter use 3000, an id listed as active for Web Connect in Intuit's published bank list. Intuit does not document exactly how QuickBooks Online checks the id.
How do I record a Venmo transfer to my bank?
A Standard or Instant Transfer moves your own money from Venmo to your bank. Record it as a transfer between the Venmo account and the bank account, not as income or an expense. When both accounts are in your books, the bank side matches the transfer.
Should I use .qbo or the QuickBooks Online CSV?
For QuickBooks Desktop, use .qbo: Web Connect is how Desktop brings in bank transactions. For QuickBooks Online either works. The .qbo file skips the column-mapping step, and each transaction carries an id built from its date, amount, description and platform id, so the same row converted from two overlapping exports gets the same id.
