QuickBooks cannot read your .qbo Web Connect file

In short: QuickBooks Desktop shows "QuickBooks found an error. We can't read the file [Your financial institution] sent." or "QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download." when a Web Connect file cannot be used. Intuit's fixes start with downloading the file again. If your bank or app only offers a CSV, the converter builds a .qbo file from it.

Fix the file

Bank CSV to QuickBooks (.qbo Web Connect)

A CSV with a date column and an amount (or debit and credit) column

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

What you see

Importing a .qbo file shows one of these messages from Intuit's list: "QuickBooks found an error. We can't read the file [Your financial institution] sent.", "An error occurred while processing your online banking data.", "Your data was not imported into QuickBooks." or "QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download."

Why it happens

Intuit's Web Connect troubleshooting page covers these messages. Its fixes include downloading the .qbo file again from the bank's website rather than from inside QuickBooks, checking whether the bank still supports Web Connect, switching the bank feed to Classic (Register) mode, and testing the file in a new company file.

On QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, Intuit's page for error OL-222 says it can come from a damaged .qbo file or an out-of-date list of financial institutions.

A file that started life as a CSV and was renamed to .qbo cannot work: a .qbo file is an OFX statement with Intuit fields, not a table.

How to fix it

  1. Try Intuit's fixes first if your bank produced the file: download it again from the bank's website and import it once more.
  2. If you only have a CSV (from your bank or a payment app), drop it into the converter above.
  3. Under options choose the account type you import into (checking, savings or credit card), so it matches the QuickBooks account.
  4. Download the .qbo file and import it through Web Connect, or upload it in QuickBooks Online.

What this does not fix

  • Files from this converter carry Intuit bank id 3000, which Intuit's published list of financial institutions shows as active for Web Connect. Intuit does not document how QuickBooks checks the id, so the converter cannot promise QuickBooks accepts it.
  • Because that id belongs to a real bank in Intuit's list, QuickBooks Desktop may show that bank's name for the account; the transactions still go into the account you pick.
  • Errors that come from QuickBooks itself (an update in progress, a damaged company file, sign-in prompts) are not fixed by a new file.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop

  1. QuickBooks Online: go to Transactions > Bank transactions, click Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this .qbo file, pick the QuickBooks account to put it in, and click Continue.
  3. QuickBooks Desktop: File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files, choose the file, then pick or create the account.
  4. Review the transactions under For review and add or match them.

Questions

Can I rename a CSV to .qbo?
No. A .qbo file is an OFX bank statement with Intuit's fields, so QuickBooks cannot read a renamed CSV. The converter builds the statement from the CSV's rows.
What does "unable to verify the Financial Institution information" mean?
It is one of the Web Connect errors on Intuit's troubleshooting page, which does not say exactly what QuickBooks checks. Files from this converter carry Intuit bank id 3000, an id listed as active for Web Connect in Intuit's published list.
Does QuickBooks Online take .qbo files too?
Yes. Intuit's upload page lists .qbo among the file types for a manual upload in QuickBooks Online, within the 350 KB and 1,000 line limits; bigger files are also split into parts.
