Your Cash App CSV does not import cleanly into QuickBooks

In short: A Cash App transactions CSV has more than a dozen columns, separate Amount, Fee and Net Amount values, failed payments that never moved money, and dates such as "2024-09-26 16:18:23 EDT". QuickBooks Online wants 3 or 4 columns with one date format. The converter writes only the rows that moved money, with fees on their own lines.

Fix the file

Cash App to QuickBooks Online (CSV)

cash_app_report_<number>.csv

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

One email when it ships. The address is used for nothing else. Details.

What you see

At the mapping step QuickBooks Online asks which column is the amount, failed payments come in as real ones, or the dates are rejected.

Why it happens

Cash App's tax help page says it will "send you a Transaction CSV statement for easy review", found under Documents & statements, Business Account Taxes, Tax Documents. Real Cash App CSV exports published in public code repositories show the layout: Transaction ID, Date with time and time zone, Transaction Type, Amount, Fee, Net Amount, Status and more.

QuickBooks Online needs 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 (Date, Description, Credit, Debit) and one date format throughout, per Intuit's upload page.

How to fix it

  1. Get the Transactions CSV from Cash App (for business accounts: Profile, Documents & statements, Business Account Taxes, Tax Documents, Transactions CSV).
  2. Drop the file into the converter above. It is recognised as a Cash App CSV.
  3. Download the QuickBooks Online CSV (or a .qbo file under To) and upload it into a bank account in QuickBooks named Cash App.

What this does not fix

  • Cash App's monthly account statements are documents to view, not CSV files; the converter needs the CSV.
  • Failed rows and $0 notification rows are left out and counted in the notes.
  • Bitcoin and stock purchases are moves into an investment, not income or expense; how to record gains is a tax question.

Import the fixed file into QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions > Link account (or Update) > Upload from file.
  2. Choose this CSV and the account to put it in.
  3. Map the columns: Date to Date, Description to Description, Amount to Amount (one column).
  4. Pick the date format MM/dd/yyyy (or the one you chose here) and confirm that the first row is a header.
  5. Review the transactions under For review.

Questions

Where do I get a CSV from Cash App?
Cash App's tax help page describes a Transactions CSV under Documents & statements, Business Account Taxes, Tax Documents for business accounts. The monthly account statements are viewable documents, not CSV files.
What happens to failed payments?
Failed rows and $0 notification rows never moved money, so the converter leaves them out and counts them as skipped rows.
Why do the dates have a time zone?
Cash App writes a time and a zone such as EDT with each date. The converter turns each into a plain date in one format, the way QuickBooks asks for.
