Quicken will not import your bank or payment app CSV

In short: Quicken for Windows can import a CSV, but only one whose first seven columns are exactly Date, Payee, FI Payee, Amount, Debit/Credit, Category and Account, with mm/dd/yyyy dates. Bank and payment app exports never come in that shape. The converter turns them into a .qfx Web Connect file, the format Quicken reads from bank downloads.

Fix the file

Bank CSV to Quicken (.qfx)

A CSV with a date column and an amount (or debit and credit) column

Your file stays on this device

It is read and converted by this page, inside your browser. Nothing from the file is uploaded, and the converter keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

One email when it ships. The address is used for nothing else. Details.

What you see

Quicken refuses the file, puts values in the wrong fields, or imports the transactions without the transfers and with duplicates.

Why it happens

Quicken's help page for CSV import says: "The file must contain the first seven comma-separated columns in exactly this order." The columns are Date, Payee, FI Payee, Amount, Debit/Credit, Category and Account, and "Do not add, remove, or reorder columns." It also says "Date values use the mm/dd/yyyy format."

The same page says "CSV import does not detect or create transfer transactions." and that CSV imports "do not check for or match existing transactions", unlike Web Connect (.QFX) imports.

It also lists files Quicken cannot import this way: "Quicken cannot import Excel (.xls), QuickBooks, PDF, or OFX files."

How to fix it

  1. Drop your bank or payment app CSV into the converter above.
  2. Pick the account type (checking, savings or credit card) and download the .qfx file.
  3. In Quicken for Windows choose File, File Import, Web Connect File, pick the file, and add it to an existing account or a new one.

What this does not fix

  • The converter does not write Quicken's seven-column CSV; it writes .qfx.
  • Files carry Intuit bank id 3000. Whether every Quicken version accepts it is not confirmed, so check the imported transactions.
  • Quicken for Mac has File > Import > Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX). How it treats converted QFX files is not confirmed.

Import the fixed file into Quicken (Windows and Mac)

  1. Windows: File > File Import > Web Connect (.QFX) File, then choose this file.
  2. Mac: Quicken for Mac has File > Import > Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX). How it treats converted QFX files is not confirmed, so check the imported transactions.
  3. Link it to an existing account or create a new one, then accept the transactions.

Questions

Can Quicken import a CSV at all?
Quicken for Windows can, through File, File Import, Banking Transactions, From (.CSV) File, but only with the seven columns in Quicken's exact order. A .qfx file needs no column layout.
Will Quicken create a new account for the file?
When you import a .qfx file Quicken lets you add the transactions to an existing account or create a new one. Many people make one account per payment app so its balance can be checked against the app.
What is the difference between QFX and OFX?
Both are the Open Financial Exchange statement format. QFX adds Intuit fields for Quicken; plain OFX is what most other programs read.
